How to connect your hearing aids to the TV
Whether you're catching up on your favorite shows or enjoying a film, connecting your hearing aids directly to the TV can significantly enhance the experience.
With options like Bluetooth, a TV streamer, or a telecoil, there's a solution to meet every need and technology preference.
Direct Bluetooth connection for compatible hearing aids and TVs
Most modern hearing aids, including our hearing aids here at OutsideClinic, can offer full Bluetooth streaming functionality.
If the hearing aids have Bluetooth support built in, they may be able to be connected directly to TVs without the need for additional devices. For this function to be available, you will need to be connecting to a modern smart TV that uses the ASHA (Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids) protocol, not all TVs support this, so please check your TV’s instruction manual for confirmation.
Each hearing aid manufacturer implements their wireless technology in a slightly different way, so you’ll need to speak to your audiologist to get help with your specific setup.
How to connect compatible hearing aids and TVs
Most of the time, it’s a case of:
- Access the settings menu on the TV, locate the Bluetooth settings, ensure Bluetooth is turned on and select ‘search for available devices’.
- Reboot your hearing aids by placing them in the charger for 10 seconds, then remove them, or for battery powered aids, open and close the battery door.
The TV should detect your hearing aids, displaying them in the list of available devices. Select your hearing aids to complete the pairing. Note that some devices may require confirmation on both ends.
Using a TV streamer
If your hearing aids or TV do not support direct Bluetooth streaming, a TV streamer is an excellent alternative. These devices transmit sound wirelessly to your hearing aids, often providing better sound quality and more stable connections.
Most hearing aid manufacturers provide TV streaming devices to use with their hearing aids:
- Widex TV Play: Compatible with many Widex hearing aids, this streamer allows independent volume control for the hearing aid user and other TV listeners.
- Signia StreamLine TV: This device supports streaming to multiple pairs of Signia hearing aids and allows for seamless control via the Signia app, including the ability to take phone calls without interrupting TV audio.
- Starkey TV Streamer: Offers excellent sound quality with manual or app-based volume control, suitable for both analogue and digital inputs.
These devices ensure that you can enjoy your programmes at a comfortable volume, with clear audio directly in your hearing aids.
At OutsideClinic, we offer a range of TV streamers compatible with your hearing aids. Our audiologists are here to help you select the right device, set it up, and explain how to use it effectively. Using a telecoil
For those whose hearing aids are equipped with a telecoil, connecting to a TV via an induction loop system can be a cost-effective and reliable option.
Telecoils are small coils inside the hearing aids that receive magnetic signals, delivering clear sound without the need for Bluetooth.
The benefit of using a telecoil is that they allow you to adjust the volume to your needs without affecting others and can work across various media setups.
Setting up a telecoil
An induction loop system needs to be installed in your viewing area. Once set up, the telecoil in your hearing aids will pick up the TV audio, providing a clear and personalised listening experience.
